Gluten-free Chinese pepper steak in a frying pan served with a bowl of white rice

Who knew a delicious Chinese takeout can be this easy to make and healthy? Our pepper steak is a gluten-free version of the popular Chinese dish. Quickly stir fry beef and pepper strips and serve with a rice. If you are not following a gluten free diet, you can just use regular soy sauce. For a spicier version, use regular peppers instead of bell peppers.

Ingredients for Gluten-Free Chinese Pepper Steak

Ingredients for initial beef marinade

  • Beef, flank steak or sirloin, 450 gram
  • Gluten-free Tamari sauce, 1 Tablespoon
  • Cornstarch, 1 Tablespoon
  • Sesame oil, 1 Tablespoon

Ingredients for pepper steak stir fry

  • Green bell peppers, 2
  • Red bell pepper, 1
  • Oil to grease a frying pan
  • Garlic, minced, 1 Tablespoon
  • Shaoxing wine, 1 Tablespoon
  • Sea salt, ½ teaspoon
  • Low-carb sweetener, 1 teaspoon
  • Gluten-free Tamari sauce, 2 Tablespoon
  • Ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon

Instructions for Pepper Steak

1.Cut beef steak into thin strips. Remove seeds from peppers and cut them into long strips.

2.In a large bowl, mix Tamari sauce, corn starch, and sesame oil for beef marinade. Add beef strips to the marinade and set aside for 15 minutes.

3.In a large oiled frying pan, sear the beef over high heat until it is browned outside. Don’t overcook the beef. Remove beef from the pan.

4.In the same frying pan, stir fry minced garlic and pepper strips. Pour shaoxing wine around the pan to deglaze it.

5.Add back beef to the pan and sprinkle sea salt, sweetener, and tamari sauce. Stir fry for a minute over high heat.

6.Sprinkle ground black pepper at the end and turn off the heat. Serve the pepper steak  immediately.

Preparation Tips

You can use soy sauce instead of gluten-free tamari sauce if you are not restricted by diet.

You can combine spicy peppers with bell peppers if you prefer spicy food.
